Timing is everything with wildflowers

  • The best time for wildflower viewing in Colorado generally depends on the elevation and the particular species of wildflowers you want to see. In the low-elevation areas of Colorado, wildflowers typically bloom from late April to early June, while in the mid-elevation areas, they bloom from mid-June to late July. In the high-elevation areas, wildflowers typically bloom from late July to early September.
  • Some of the most popular wildflowers to see in Colorado include the Colorado Columbine, Indian Paintbrush, Lupine, and Rocky Mountain Iris (shown in photo).
  • To get the most accurate information on the best time for wildflower viewing in a specific area of Colorado, you may want to check with local parks or visitor centers, as well as consult with wildflower guidebooks or online resources.

Tips for a successful wildflower viewing adventure:

  • When to go: Peak viewing times are typically July to August, but it never hurts to check with park staff before heading out. Wildflower viewing can be as early as May and as late and early Fall.
  • Identifying flowers: Check with park staff for bloom lists, trail guides, and other educational documentation.
  • Look, but don’t touch: picking flowers is damaging to ecosystems as well as illegal.
